What a small business website costs in Michigan

Real prices published by Southwest Michigan web firms and website builders, what pushes the price up, and the running costs owners forget to budget for.

By Alanview, which runs this directory · Updated

“How much is a website?” gets the answer “it depends” so often that many owners stop asking and simply wait for a quote. It does depend, but not on mystery. A handful of Southwest Michigan firms publish their prices, and they give a fair picture of what a small business site costs here, what pushes the price up, and what you will keep paying once it is live. Every price below is as published on the firm’s own site on 27 October 2026, with a link so you can check it. Prices change, so treat them as a guide and confirm before you budget.

The short answer

  • A simple small business site (one to five pages, built on WordPress or similar): published starting prices here run from about $1,000 to $3,000.
  • A larger custom site (ten to fifteen pages or more, with custom design and written content): from about $3,000 to $10,000, and more for big sites.
  • An online store: published starting prices are $2,000 to $4,500 for a small one, before products, payments and shipping are set up.
  • Or pay monthly: some firms skip the up-front fee and charge about $150 to $400 a month for a small site, with hosting and updates included.

On top of any of these come running costs: the domain, hosting, and care or updates. These are covered below, and over a few years they can add up to as much as the build.

What Southwest Michigan firms publish

Most firms in the directory quote per project and publish no prices. These are the ones that do. “From” means the firm’s own starting price. Your site may cost more.

Two things stand out. The cheapest published builds in the region start at around $1,000, and the firms charging three to ten times that are usually including more of the thinking: what the site should say, custom design, and the words themselves. Neither is wrong. Decide which you need before you compare.

What pushes the price up

  • Pages and content. More pages cost more, but who writes them matters more. If the firm writes your copy, expect to pay for it, and expect a better site.
  • Custom design or a template. A well-chosen template is quicker and cheaper. A design made for you costs more and sets you apart.
  • Selling online. Products, payments, shipping, taxes and order emails make a store a bigger job than a brochure site. Connecting it to stock, accounting or a point-of-sale system adds more.
  • Bookings, forms and integrations. Anything that has to talk to another system, such as a calendar, a CRM or a quoting tool, adds development time.
  • Photos and video. Your own photography beats stock images, but a shoot is its own cost.
  • Search work. Basic search setup should come with any site. Ongoing SEO is a separate monthly service.

The running costs owners forget

How that compares nationally

Clutch’s web design pricing guide (updated September 2026) says agencies “typically charge $2,000 to $100,000” and that hourly rates are usually “$100–$149/hour”. It also says most projects reviewed on Clutch cost under $10,000. Its average of about $38,000 is pulled up by large corporate projects. The published Southwest Michigan prices above sit at the lower end of that range, which is what you would expect for small business sites.

Building it yourself on Squarespace, Wix, Shopify or WordPress.com costs a monthly subscription plus your own time. It is a reasonable start for a very small business. Check each builder’s current US prices on its own pricing page, since they change often and vary by plan.

How to compare quotes fairly

Put every quote on the same footing: the total cost over three years, build plus running costs, and what you own at the end. Take a $1,000 build with $99 a month of care. That comes to about $4,600 over three years. A $250 a month all-in plan is $9,000 over the same period, and a $3,600 build with modest hosting may sit in between. None of these is a bad deal in itself. The right one depends on how much the firm does for you, and whether you can take the site with you if you leave.
